Biodiversity at plot level: a new dimension in climate risk management

How green is a residential mortgage portfolio, plot by plot? Achmea Mortgages has developed a methodology to measure ecosystem services at plot level, applied across more than 100,000 properties. To our knowledge, this is the first application of its kind within a Dutch residential mortgage portfolio.

The analysis shows that green cover is primarily determined by the behaviour of individual property owners, rather than property type or construction year. By combining climate exposure with plot-level ecosystem service capacity, a sharper picture emerges of where risks concentrate and where targeted interventions have the greatest impact.
